Donnington Grove occupies the grounds of a handsome 18th-century Gothic mansion in the Berkshire countryside just north of Newbury, and the estate setting gives the course a character that pure parkland layouts rarely match. The course was designed by Dave Thomas — the Welsh Ryder Cup player turned prolific architect — and opened in the early 1990s, routing holes through mature woodland and around the ornamental lake that fronts the manor house. Thomas made intelligent use of the natural contours and water features already embedded in the estate, creating a layout that feels established well beyond its years.
The wider area is good golf country. Newbury sits in a stretch of Berkshire and west Oxfordshire where the land rolls gently and courses tend toward the classic English parkland style. The nearby racing at Newbury Racecourse gives the town a certain sporting energy, and the M4 corridor puts Donnington within reach of both London and the West Country.
As a country club with hotel accommodation in the manor itself, this is a destination rather than a drop-in round — the kind of place where the setting does as much work as the golf.
