Few public golf facilities in New Jersey can match the sheer scale of Neshanic Valley. Built on rolling Somerset County farmland and operated by the Somerset County Park Commission, it opened in 1998 and quickly established itself as one of the best public-access layouts in the state — a rare facility where serious golfers can play a genuinely challenging, well-maintained course without a club membership.
The design works with the natural contours of the Neshanic River valley, giving the round a roomy, open feel that distinguishes it from the tree-choked parkland courses more typical of the region. Elevation changes, generous but strategically shaped fairways, and firm, fast greens reward players who think their way around rather than simply reaching for the driver. The course plays long and demands shot-making from multiple tee options, making it equally engaging for low handicappers and recreational players.
Somerset County sits in central New Jersey's quieter, more rural interior — horse farms, river corridors, and modest small towns far removed from the Shore or the suburbs. That unhurried landscape gives Neshanic Valley a sense of space and breathing room that is genuinely rare this close to the New York metro area.
