Few settings in Southern California golf carry quite the narrative weight of Strawberry Farms Golf Club, built on land that was — as the name makes plain — a working strawberry farm before Irvine's relentless development transformed the surrounding landscape. That agricultural past isn't just a curiosity; it shaped a routing that feels distinctly different from the manicured sameness of many Orange County resort and private layouts.
The course occupies a canyon environment along Peters Canyon Wash, giving it genuine elevation changes and a naturalistic character unusual for the flatlands many associate with this part of the Southland. Mature sycamores and native vegetation line several corridors, and the creek comes into play often enough to demand more than route memorization.
Irvine itself has long supported serious golf — the city and the broader Irvine Company master-planned community have made recreation infrastructure a priority for decades. Strawberry Farms stands out within that landscape as a course with actual topographic personality, rewarding players who work the ball rather than simply overpower flat, featureless ground.
