Hardy country. Dorchester sits at the heart of Dorset, a county where chalk downland rolls into heath and the skies tend to feel bigger than anywhere else in southern England. Came Down Golf Club — perched on the ridgeline above the town — has been part of this landscape for well over a century, one of those quietly venerable English downland courses that rewards local knowledge and punishes complacency in equal measure.
The downland setting is everything here. Turf this far up on the chalk drains fast and runs firm for much of the year, producing a links-adjacent bounce and roll that flattens handicaps and adds a ground-game dimension you rarely encounter on softer parkland layouts. Wind off the ridge is a constant factor, turning straightforward holes into genuine tests of shot selection and trajectory.
A par 70 signals a design that prizes precision over power. Shorter par 4s and the absence of a full set of par 5s keep big hitters honest and put a premium on iron play, course management, and the kind of gritty, adaptive golf that downland courses have always demanded.
