Few American golf clubs carry the major-championship weight of Valhalla. Designed by Jack Nicklaus and opened in 1986, it was built to host elite professional golf from the start — and it has delivered, becoming one of the PGA of America's most trusted venues. The PGA Championship has returned here multiple times, producing some of the sport's most memorable finishes: Tiger Woods and Bob May's sudden-death playoff in 2000, Rory McIlroy's dominant wire-to-wire win in 2014. The Ryder Cup came here in 1996 and again in 2008, the latter ending in one of the competition's most dramatic closing-holes finishes.
The course sits in the rolling countryside east of Louisville, a city better known for bourbon and the Kentucky Derby than for golf, but Valhalla has firmly planted the sport's flag here. The layout moves through mature hardwoods and across varied terrain, with water threatening on multiple holes and a closing stretch that consistently produces pressure-filled moments at the highest level.
