Ocean Reef Club sits at the northern tip of Key Largo, the uppermost island in the Florida Keys, and it operates as one of the most exclusive private communities in the United States. Access is tightly controlled — you're either a member, a guest of one, or you're not getting in — which means the grounds, including the golf, exist in a world almost entirely removed from the public eye.
The Dolphin Course is one of 2 courses within the Ocean Reef property, and like most golf in the Keys, it plays through a landscape shaped more by water, mangroves, and subtropical vegetation than by dramatic elevation. South Florida golf is about managing humidity, reading wind off the water, and navigating the particular challenges that come with courses built close to sea level in a marine environment.
Key Largo itself is less a town than a gateway — the first landfall after the long bridge crossing from the mainland — and Ocean Reef occupies its own enclave at the quieter, less commercial northern end, well apart from the dive shops and highway traffic the Keys are otherwise known for.
