Few clubs in the United States carry a reputation quite as quietly commanding as Shoreacres. Designed by Seth Raynor and opened in 1921, it occupies a dramatic stretch of Lake Michigan shoreline in Lake Bluff, north of Chicago, where deep ravines carved by glacial meltwater cut through the blufftop property in ways that almost no other piece of American golf real estate can match. Raynor — a protégé of Charles Blair Macdonald — worked with the land's violent topography rather than against it, routing holes across and along these ravines to create carries and angles that reward intelligent play over raw power. The course is routinely cited among the finest in the country and consistently places on national top-100 lists.
Shoreacres is a private club of long standing, and its exclusivity has helped preserve the course largely in its original character. Template holes inspired by Macdonald's transatlantic design philosophy — Redan, Cape, Short — appear throughout the round.
Lake Bluff itself is a composed, affluent North Shore community roughly 30 miles north of downtown Chicago. The setting is unmistakably Midwestern in its restraint, but the land beneath Shoreacres is anything but flat, and the views across the ravines toward Lake Michigan make it feel genuinely singular.
