Few university golf facilities carry the history and competitive pedigree of the Illini's home course. The University of Illinois Golf Course has served as the training and competitive ground for one of the most storied college golf programs in the country, producing Big Ten champions and players who've gone on to professional careers. The layout has undergone significant development over the decades to meet the demands of elite amateur competition while remaining accessible to students, faculty, and the broader campus community.
Savoy sits immediately south of Champaign-Urbana on the flat, open prairie of east-central Illinois — terrain that offers little natural shelter from the winds that sweep across the corn-country landscape. On this kind of ground, course architecture has to work hard to create interest, and the routing earns its variety through strategic bunkering, green contours, and the kind of positioning challenges that reward shot-shaping over raw distance.
As a university course, it occupies a specific and appealing niche — competitive enough to test serious players, yet fundamentally a place where the game is taught, played daily, and genuinely loved.
