Few resort destinations in Japan carry the cachet of Karuizawa, and the Karuizawa Golf Club stands as one of the oldest and most storied layouts in the country. Founded in the Meiji era when foreign diplomats and missionaries first established Karuizawa as a summer retreat, the club reflects that rarefied, early-20th-century atmosphere — a place where golf arrived alongside tennis courts and Victorian-style cottages as a pastime of the privileged. The course retains a genuine sense of that lineage, feeling less like a modern resort product and more like an institution with deep roots.

The setting does much of the work. Karuizawa sits at roughly 1,000 meters elevation in the shadow of Mount Asama, Honshu's most active volcano, and the surrounding forests of birch and larch give the layout a cool, distinctly alpine character even in midsummer — precisely when the lowland heat drives the urban elite up here to escape.

As a private members' club, access is limited and the atmosphere is deliberately understated. The members tend to be old-money Tokyo families for whom belonging is itself the point, and the course rewards careful, thoughtful play over raw power.
