Long Reef Golf Club occupies one of the more dramatic pieces of golfing land in Australia — a headland site on Sydney's Northern Beaches that juts into the Pacific Ocean, with the Tasman Sea flanking play on multiple holes. The course sits atop the Long Reef Aquatic Reserve, and the surrounding landscape of coastal heath, seabirds, and churning ocean makes it immediately recognizable to anyone who has played it. Wind is the permanent additional hazard here; the same breezes that draw hang-gliders to the headland can turn a straightforward card into something far more complicated.
Collaroy sits roughly 20 kilometres north of Sydney's CBD, in a stretch of coastline where the Northern Beaches communities maintain a relaxed, salt-aired character distinct from the city proper. The local golf scene is competitive, but Long Reef's setting gives it a particular identity — there are not many courses anywhere in the world where the ocean is this present, this visible, and this consequential to how the round actually plays.
As a public-access club, Long Reef welcomes visiting golfers without the formality of private membership arrangements, which makes its spectacular headland setting genuinely accessible. Par 71 suggests a layout that rewards precision over raw power, and on an exposed coastal site where club selection shifts with every gust, that premium on thinking your way around feels entirely appropriate.
