Eaglesticks is one of those courses that earned a genuine national reputation without being attached to a resort brand or a prestigious private club. Designed by Michael Hurdzan and opened in 1991, it quickly drew attention as a public-access layout that punched well above its weight — Golf Digest named it one of the best public courses in Ohio not long after it opened, and the recognition stuck. Hurdzan, an Ohio native with a PhD in golf course architecture, built something here that respected both the land and the player's experience, routing the holes through rolling terrain that gives the course a natural, unforced feel.
Zanesville sits in Muskingum County in the southeastern part of the state, where the land begins to ridge and fold in ways that flat-country Ohio rarely allows. That topography is a genuine asset, and Hurdzan used it to create elevation changes and angles that make the course play differently than its numbers suggest.
Par 70 means the design leans on shorter holes done well — accuracy and shotmaking rewarded over raw length. For public-golf enthusiasts in the Midwest, Eaglesticks has long been a worthy road trip.
