Few parts of Scotland feel as quietly removed from the tourist trail as Berwickshire, and Lauder sits right at the heart of that undiscovered stretch of the Scottish Borders. The town itself is an ancient royal burgh strung along Lauderdale, the valley of the Leader Water, with the Lammermuir Hills rising to the north and the broader Border hills rolling away to the south. It's farming country, moorland country — honest and unshowy, with a wind that has opinions.
Lauder Golf Club is one of those enduring Border clubs where the game is played for its own sake, without fuss or pretension. A par 70 suggests a layout that rewards accuracy and course management over raw length, and on ground shaped by glacial valleys and open pasture, the terrain and the prevailing weather tend to do more work than any architect needs to. Sheep-grazed turf, firm lies, and unpredictable winds are the real test.
