Wintonbury Hills Golf Course

Few public courses in New England generated as much anticipation as Wintonbury Hills when it opened in 2005. Designed by Pete Dye — the architect behind Harbour Town, TPC Sawgrass, and Whistling Straits — it marked a rare instance of a world-class design being delivered as a municipally owned facility, built by the town of Bloomfield on land that had long served the community. Dye brought his trademark arsenal: railroad ties, severe bunkering, forced carries, and greens that demand precise approach angles. The result is a course that plays harder than its yardage implies and rewards repeat study.

Bloomfield sits just north of Hartford in Connecticut's Hartford County, a region of modest hills, mature hardwoods, and open meadowlands. The site gives Dye room to work with rolling terrain, and the fall foliage season turns a round here into something genuinely scenic.

For a daily-fee course, the pedigree is unusual. Golfers who expect a routine municipal layout are routinely surprised — Wintonbury Hills plays with the personality and the teeth of a private club.
