Shepherd's Hollow is one of southeastern Michigan's most acclaimed public courses, opened in 1999 and designed by Arthur Hills — the Michigan-born architect whose portfolio spans dozens of respected layouts across the country. Built across a dramatic glacially carved landscape in Orion Township, the course uses the natural terrain almost extravagantly: deep ravines, mature hardwood forests, and significant elevation changes that would feel exceptional anywhere and are genuinely rare in the flatlands of the Midwest. It has earned consistent recognition on Michigan's top-courses lists and draws players from metro Detroit willing to make the 45-minute drive north for something that plays nothing like the region's typical parkland fare.
The routing takes full advantage of every contour the land offers, and several holes require precise shot-shaping just to keep the ball in play — the ravines aren't decorative, they're very much in the game. The back nine in particular rewards players who have paid attention to what came before.
Clarkson itself sits in Oakland County, where suburban Detroit gives way to lake country and wooded hills. The fall season here, when the hardwoods turn, makes for as visually striking a round as you'll find in the state.
