Few mountain golf courses announce themselves as dramatically as Coyote Moon. Designed by Brad Bell and opened in 2000, the course winds through the Sierra Nevada forest just outside Truckee at elevations approaching 6,000 feet, routing through dense stands of pine and fir with the kind of natural topography that a bulldozer could only ruin. Golf Digest has ranked it among the best public courses in California, a distinction earned by a layout that demands both precision and nerve — errant shots disappear into timber, and the altitude adds distance that flattens the ego of anyone leaning too hard on their handicap.
Truckee sits near Lake Tahoe in the northern Sierra, a mountain town with genuine character, hard winters, and short golf seasons that make every round feel earned. The surrounding landscape is rugged high-country terrain — granite outcroppings, glacial meadows, and pines that thin into open sky on the ridgelines.
Coyote Moon plays as a pure golf experience: no real estate, no resort infrastructure crowding the corridors, just a course carved respectfully into spectacular mountain wilderness. It rewards strategic thinking and honest ball-striking, and on a clear Sierra morning, it's as good as California public golf gets.
