Few courses in England carry quite the same quiet authenticity as Littlehampton Golf Club, which traces its roots back to the 1880s and remains one of the oldest clubs on the Sussex coast. The layout sits on genuine links terrain alongside the River Arun estuary, where the ground is firm and fast, the turf close-cropped, and the wind — almost always present — effectively becomes the 19th club in your bag. This is links golf in its purest, most unadorned form, far removed from the manicured resort experience.
The course occupies a narrow strip of land between the river and the sea, which gives it a character you simply cannot manufacture. Holes run back and forth with the prevailing breeze shifting their difficulty unpredictably, and the flat linksland rewards low, running shots and punishes those who insist on playing an aerial game.
Littlehampton itself is an unpretentious seaside town at the mouth of the Arun, and the club reflects that spirit — serious about its golf, welcoming to visitors, and entirely without pretension. For anyone touring the south coast links, it deserves a prominent place on the itinerary.
