Les Herbiers sits in the heart of the Vendée Bocage, where the gentle hills of the Massif Armoricain begin to soften into the plains of western France — an inland landscape of hedgerows, sunken lanes, and old stone farmsteads that sets it apart from the better-known coastal courses of the Vendée Atlantic shore. Golf Les Alouettes belongs to this quieter, rural side of the department, the kind of course where the surrounding countryside does much of the scenic work.
The Bocage terrain gives the layout a naturally rolling character, with elevation changes that add variety and visual interest without tipping into severity. Mature trees frame many of the holes, and the course opens out at moments to wider views across the bocage — a pleasant contrast to the tighter, tree-lined stretches.
Les Herbiers itself is a small market town with a proud identity, known locally as the gateway to the Puy du Fou historical theme park, one of France's most visited attractions. Visitors combining a round here with a trip to the Puy du Fou will find the pace of golf at Les Alouettes a welcome, unhurried counterpoint to the spectacle down the road.
