Lackabane Course

Few golf destinations in Ireland carry the weight of Killarney's reputation. Set against the backdrop of the MacGillycuddy's Reeks and the shimmering waters of Lough Leane, Killarney Golf & Fishing Club has long been considered one of the most scenically dramatic settings in the game — and the Lackabane Course is its third layout, opened in 2004 to complement the celebrated Killeen and Mahony's Point courses.

Lackabane occupies higher, more exposed ground than its siblings, which fundamentally changes its character. Where Killeen and Mahony's Point hug the lakeshore and deliver that postcard-perfect waterside drama, Lackabane plays across rolling, heathland-style terrain with sweeping views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The course demands more from the wind-reader, and its elevated positions make club selection genuinely tricky. Designed by Donald Steel, it rewards patience and course management over raw power.

Killarney itself is Ireland's great tourist heartland — a busy, welcoming town surrounded by national park, where the golf culture runs deep and the courses are treated as part of the broader landscape rather than apart from it.
