Atlixco sits in a broad valley in the state of Puebla, about an hour southwest of Puebla City, where the Sierra Madre del Sur begins to rise and the volcano Popocatépetl dominates the eastern sky on clear days. The region is known for its flower cultivation, colonial architecture, and a climate mild enough year-round that outdoor recreation is practically a local religion. Golf in this corner of Mexico occupies a social and civic role distinct from the resort courses along the coasts — it belongs to the community.
Club Campestre El Cristo is a private country club in that tradition, the kind of place where membership is a generational affair and the clubhouse conversation is as important as the round itself. "Campestre" clubs throughout Mexico function as a hub for families and business relationships alike, and El Cristo appears to follow that model, serving Atlixco's professional and agricultural communities.
Without detailed records of the course's architect or design history, what can be said with confidence is that any course at this elevation and latitude — roughly 1,800 meters above sea level — will play firm and fast, with mountain air that carries the ball noticeably farther than golfers from sea-level courses expect.
