Few links courses anywhere carry the emotional weight of Waterville. Laid out along the wild Atlantic fringe of the Iveragh Peninsula in County Kerry, it occupies one of the most dramatic stretches of linksland in Ireland — dunes rolling toward the ocean, the MacGillycuddy's Reeks mountains visible inland, and a sky that changes by the hour. The course was substantially shaped by Eddie Hackett in the 1970s, with later refinements by Tom Fazio, and it has earned a place among the top links courses in the world, regularly appearing in serious rankings alongside the great Irish and Scottish tests.
The course is particularly associated with Payne Stewart, who loved Waterville deeply and practiced here before his final Open Championship. A bronze statue of him stands at the 18th green — a quietly moving tribute that tells you something about the club's character. The par-3 17th, known as "Mulcahy's Peak," is among the most photographed holes in Ireland.
Waterville village is remote by any standard, sitting near the end of the famous Ring of Kerry, and that isolation is part of the appeal. You travel to get here, and the journey — past stone walls, sheep-dotted hillsides, and the crashing Atlantic — feels like a proper pilgrimage before you even pull on a glove.
