Gold Canyon sits at the western edge of the Superstition Mountains, where the Sonoran Desert transitions from the sprawling Phoenix metro into genuine wilderness. The Superstitions themselves — jagged, volcanic, and steeped in Lost Dutchman legend — form one of the most dramatic backdrops in American golf. Sidewinder is one of 2 courses at the Gold Canyon Golf Resort, and the name alone tells you something about the terrain: this is rattlesnake country, built into land that doesn't yield easily to fairways.
Where the resort's Dinosaur Mountain course draws most of the headline attention for its elevation changes and mountain drama, Sidewinder plays as the more approachable of the two, working through the high desert floor with wider landing areas and a layout that rewards strategic play over pure length. The par-71 configuration signals an asymmetric design — expect a mix of shorter, decision-making holes that suit players willing to think their way around.
Winter and spring bring ideal conditions, with warm days, low humidity, and the desert in color. Saguaro cacti, ocotillo, and palo verde line the edges of play, and the mountain views are constant. For visitors to the greater Phoenix and Mesa area, Gold Canyon offers a sense of escape that the city's purely urban courses simply cannot match.
