Cochrane sits on the Mississippi River in Buffalo County, one of the most dramatically scenic stretches of western Wisconsin, where limestone bluffs rise sharply above the river valley and the surrounding coulees cut through some of the most rugged terrain in the upper Midwest. It's not a part of the state that announces itself as golf country — which is precisely what makes a full 18-hole layout here worth seeking out.
The Grove plays to a par 70, which typically signals a design that leans on precision over raw power — shorter par 4s, a premium on ball-striking, and conditions where local knowledge of terrain and wind off the bluffs can matter as much as yardage. Whether the routing works with the natural contours of the land or carves something more measured into it, the setting itself does heavy lifting.
This is rural Wisconsin golf at its most unhurried. Expect the kind of pace, price point, and unpretentious atmosphere that has largely disappeared from more traveled markets — a honest local course in a genuinely beautiful corner of the country.
