Rasa de Berbes

Few corners of Spain feel as removed from the country's sun-drenched golf image as the Asturian coast, and Rasa de Berbes leans into that contrast entirely. The course sits on the rasa — the flat-topped clifftop terrace that gives it its name — above the village of Berbes, just west of Ribadesella, with the Cantabrian Sea visible across much of the round. This is green, Atlantic-facing northern Spain, where the landscape has more in common with Ireland or Galicia than with Andalucía: pasture, heathland, and a sky that can change its mind several times before you reach the turn.

The layout makes genuine use of the clifftop terrain, with several holes playing along or toward the coastal edge, delivering the kind of panoramic exposure that no amount of course design can manufacture — it either comes with the land or it doesn't. The wind off the sea is a constant and honest third party in every scorecard negotiation.

Ribadesella itself is a handsome fishing town at the mouth of the Sella River, known for its prehistoric caves and August kayak race. Golf here is unhurried and local in character, a world away from resort golf, and better for it.
