Few golf destinations can claim the outright strangeness of Key West Golf Club — a course that sits at the end of the Florida Keys, roughly 90 miles from Miami and just a few miles from Cuba. Playing golf at the literal tip of the continental United States carries its own novelty, but the course earns its reputation on merit: it was designed by Rees Jones and later refinished to work within one of the more eccentric natural environments in American golf, where mangroves, saltwater ponds, and the ever-present Atlantic trade winds combine to make a par 70 layout play considerably more demanding than it might look on paper.
The Keys are not natural golf country — flat, low-lying, and perpetually humid — and the course leans into that rather than fighting it. Water is everywhere, the rough has a subtropical texture that punishes errant shots, and the wildlife sharing the property (iguanas are a fixture) keeps rounds consistently interesting.
Key West itself is a town built around tourism, eccentricity, and a deep indifference to convention, and the golf club reflects that spirit. It is the only 18-hole course on the island, making it genuinely one of a kind — a place where the sunset after your round may well outshine whatever score you posted.
