Few courses in American golf carry the name recognition that comes with a Monday morning in January, when the world's longest hitters descend on Maui for the PGA Tour's Sentry Tournament of Champions. The Plantation Course at Kapalua is where that event has lived since 1999, and it has produced some of the most dramatic finishes in Tour history — including Dustin Johnson's mind-bending 265 total in 2018 and Hideki Matsuyama's back-to-back victories. Designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw and opened in 1991, it was built to reward risk and running shots over the pure aerial game, a philosophy that feels almost rebellious on a modern Tour stop.
The layout tumbles across the West Maui Mountains above Kapalua, with elevation changes severe enough that the course plays considerably shorter than its championship yardage suggests. Trade winds come and go unpredictably, making club selection a genuine puzzle even for professionals.
Lahaina sits on Maui's dry leeward coast, a historic whaling town with deep Native Hawaiian roots and, more recently, the devastating 2023 wildfires. Playing here carries a weight and a beauty that no scorecard can quite prepare you for.
