East Dubuque sits at the far northwestern edge of Illinois, where the state's flat agricultural interior gives way to something dramatically different — the Driftless Area, a region the glaciers bypassed entirely, leaving behind steep bluffs, wooded ridgelines, and the broad Mississippi River valley. It's genuine hill country, and Lacoma Golf Course sits within that landscape, which means a round here looks and feels nothing like the pancake-flat parkland courses that dominate much of the state.
The Dubuque metro straddles the Illinois-Iowa-Wisconsin tripoint, and the regional golf scene reflects that cross-border mix — a community of players who take their golf seriously and have real options on both sides of the river. A course in East Dubuque draws from that entire market, and the terrain alone gives it a character that flatter, more manufactured layouts simply can't replicate.
Without more detailed records on Lacoma's architect or history, what's worth noting is that the Driftless setting does the heavy lifting here — elevation changes, wooded corridors, and views that tend to reward players who engage with the land rather than just the yardage.
