Few clubs in Canada carry as much institutional weight as Royal Ottawa. Founded in 1891 and granted its royal designation by King Edward VII in 1908, it stands among the oldest and most storied golf clubs in the country, a fixture of the capital region's social and sporting fabric for well over a century. The club relocated to its current site in Gatineau — just across the Ottawa River from Parliament Hill — in 1904, and the property has been shaped over the decades into a course that rewards precision over power, with tree-lined fairways and firm, fast greens that demand a complete game.
Gatineau sits within the Outaouais region of Quebec, where the Canadian Shield begins to assert itself in the landscape. The terrain is rolling rather than dramatic, and the mature hardwood forest that frames much of the property turns extraordinary shades of red and gold in September, making autumn rounds genuinely memorable.
As a private members' club with more than 130 years of history, Royal Ottawa offers the kind of unhurried, tradition-conscious golf experience that is increasingly rare — a place where the game's manners matter as much as the scorecard.
