Edwards Air Force Base sits on the edge of the Mojave Desert in the high desert of Southern California, one of the most consequential pieces of land in American aviation history — where Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier and where the Space Shuttle touched down. Muroc Lake Golf Course sits within this storied installation, making it one of the more singular places in American military golf. The course takes its name from Muroc Dry Lake, the vast alkali flat that gave early test pilots their natural runway and gave the base its original identity before it was renamed in 1949.
Playing golf in the Mojave means contending with the environment as much as the layout — relentless sun, persistent wind sweeping off the desert floor, and an arid landscape that bears little resemblance to the manicured parkland most golfers picture. The dry air and elevation add distance to your shots, but the wind has a habit of taking it right back.
As a military installation course, Muroc Lake serves active-duty personnel, their families, retirees, and authorized guests — the kind of club held together by community and camaraderie rather than exclusivity.
