South Hills Country Club occupies the rolling, wooded terrain south of Pittsburgh, in an area that gave the club — and the broader region — its name. The South Hills suburbs developed through the mid-20th century as Pittsburgh's steel prosperity pushed families outward, and the country clubs that emerged alongside that growth became anchors of community life. The landscape here is classic western Pennsylvania: tree-lined, hilly, and prone to the kind of elevation change that adds character but demands strategy off the tee.
The par-71 layout signals something a little different from a conventional parkland design — likely a course that leans on par-3s or shorter par-4s to make its case, rewarding precision and course management over raw distance. Western Pennsylvania terrain naturally encourages routing that works with the land rather than against it, and the hills south of the city provide plenty of topographic interest without a designer having to manufacture it.
