Kilcoole sits on the coastal fringe of County Wicklow, just south of Greystones, where the Irish Sea defines the eastern horizon and the Wicklow Mountains rise sharply to the west. It's a stretch of Ireland that has quietly supported a strong local golf culture for generations, with the wider county earning a reputation as a genuine destination for the game — home to some of the country's most celebrated parkland and links layouts.
Kilcoole Golf Club occupies this appealing corridor between mountain and sea, and the landscape itself does much of the work in shaping the character of the course. This part of Wicklow tends toward mild, Atlantic-influenced weather, though the coastal exposure means the wind is rarely absent and almost never irrelevant.
As an 18-hole members' club serving a close-knit community, Kilcoole carries the unpretentious, sociable atmosphere typical of the best Irish provincial clubs — a place where the game is taken seriously without being made self-important. Visitors generally find that kind of welcome refreshing.
