Montgomery sits in the rolling hill country of central Pennsylvania, part of a region where farmland and woodland trade off across the landscape and the Susquehanna River watershed shapes the terrain. It's a quieter corner of the state, removed from the Philadelphia suburbs and the larger Pocono resort belt, with a golf culture rooted more in the everyday game than in destination travel.
White Deer Golf Club takes its name from the local color of Union County — White Deer Creek and the White Deer Valley are landmarks of this part of the ridge-and-valley Appalachian country, a landscape defined by long forested ridgelines, creek bottoms, and open meadow pockets. That geography tends to produce courses with natural elevation change, mature tree cover, and holes that work with the land rather than against it.
As a par-72 18-hole layout in this setting, White Deer reads like a course built for the region's working golfers — accessible enough for regular play but shaped by terrain that keeps the round interesting. Central Pennsylvania in late summer and fall, when the hardwoods turn, is genuinely fine golf country.
