Portage Lake sits at the heart of Maine's Aroostook County, a vast and lightly traveled corner of the state better known for potato farming and boreal forest than for golf. That remoteness is precisely the point. Portage Hills Country Club occupies a landscape shaped by glaciers — rolling terrain, stands of birch and spruce, and the kind of clear-sky silence that has largely disappeared from golf closer to population centers.
A par-72 layout in this setting almost certainly plays longer than the numbers suggest. Aroostook County's short growing season produces firm, fast conditions by midsummer, and when the wind moves across open farmland and lake country, course management matters far more than raw distance. The course serves a tight-knit local membership and the seasonal residents who return to the lake each summer — the kind of club where the game still feels unhurried.
Northern Maine's golf season runs roughly June through September, so playing Portage Hills carries a certain intentionality. You don't end up here by accident. The reward is golf in one of New England's most genuinely unspoiled corners.
