La Durance

The Domaine de Châteauneuf sits at the heart of this course — a broad agricultural estate in the Durance River valley, where the river itself defines the western edge of the property and the Luberon massif rises to the north. La Durance opened in the early 1990s and was designed by Ronald Fream, the American architect responsible for dozens of European layouts during that era. Fream worked with the flat, alluvial terrain of the valley floor and introduced generous water features and strategic bunkering to compensate for the absence of dramatic natural elevation change.

The course plays through mature plane trees and Mediterranean pines, with views reaching toward the limestone ridges of the Alpilles to the south. The Durance's irrigation canals thread through several holes, making water a recurring threat rather than a decorative afterthought. Wind off the valley can shift conditions considerably from morning to afternoon, and the Provençal summer heat means early tee times reward the well-organized visitor.

Mallemort sits roughly midway between Aix-en-Provence and Avignon — two cities with serious golf infrastructure nearby — making La Durance a natural stop for touring golfers moving through the Provence interior. It functions as a resort-accessible public course, and the surrounding landscape, olive groves, lavender, and the wide pale sky of the Midi, does much of the atmospheric heavy lifting.
