Few public courses in Houston carry as much civic history as Gus Wortham. Named for the Houston insurance magnate and philanthropist Gus Sessions Wortham, the course has long served as one of the city's workingman tracks — an accessible, unpretentious layout where generations of Houstonians have learned the game and kept their swings sharp between more ambitious outings.
The course sits within Brock Park in the East End, where the flat coastal prairie terrain that defines so much of greater Houston gives the design its character. There's little elevation change to lean on, so the layout depends on tree corridors, doglegs, and the occasionally tricky Bayou City wind to create its test. A par of 71 signals a course that demands some creativity around the shorter holes, rewarding shot-making over pure power.
As a city-run municipal, Wortham fills an important role in Houston's broad and democratic golf culture — a market that supports dozens of public options but still values an honest, affordable round close to the urban core.
