Royal Durban Golf Club

Few urban golf experiences on the African continent carry the weight of history that Royal Durban does. Founded in 1892 and granted its royal prefix by King George V, the club ranks among the oldest and most distinguished in South Africa. The course occupies a remarkable piece of ground inside the Greyville Racecourse, sharing its land with one of the country's premier horse-racing venues — a layout quirk that makes Royal Durban genuinely unlike almost anywhere else in world golf. Golfers play their round essentially encircled by the racing track, and on race days the two worlds briefly, memorably collide.

The design is flat by necessity, hemmed in by the oval of the racecourse, but the challenge comes through tight tree-lined fairways, well-bunkered greens, and the persistent coastal humidity that makes Durban's air thick and the rough unforgiving. The course has hosted multiple South African Opens and produced generations of competitive South African golfers.

Durban itself sits on the warm Indian Ocean coast of KwaZulu-Natal, a subtropical city where golf is played year-round. Royal Durban sits alongside Royal Durban's great neighbour Durban Country Club as a cornerstone of what remains one of the finest concentrations of golf in the southern hemisphere.
