Few California resort courses carry the same romantic weight as Ojai Valley Inn. The property dates to 1923, when Edward Libbey — the Toledo glass magnate who essentially built modern Ojai — helped establish the inn and its accompanying course on the floor of the valley. The golf has been refined over the decades, most significantly by Jay Morrish in the late 1980s, and the layout plays through mature oaks and sycamores with the Topa Topa Mountains rising dramatically to the north. It remains one of Southern California's most atmospheric places to play.
Ojai itself is one of the more singular towns in the American West — an arts colony with a spiritual streak, famous for its "pink moment," when the mountains flush rose-gold at sunset. The valley's mild climate and olive-grove landscapes give the course a Mediterranean quality that sets it apart from the coastal or desert resort experiences typical of the region.
At par 70, the course rewards precision over power, with a routing that favors thoughtful shot-making through tight tree-lined corridors. It suits the Inn's overall ethos: understated, graceful, and quietly exceptional.
