The flatlands at the edge of San Francisco Bay have a way of humbling golfers who underestimate them. Baylands Golf Links stretches across 6,657 yards of low-lying marshland on the western edge of Palo Alto, where the Santa Cruz Mountains fade into the distance and the Pacific wind comes off the water without a single obstruction to slow it down. That wind is the fifth club in your bag — and on bad days, the first.
Par is 72, the rating a reasonable 72.2, but the slope of 125 signals that this is not a course that rewards sloppy thinking. The routing hugs the Baylands Nature Preserve, one of the largest remaining tidal marshes on the West Coast, which means tall grasses, reedy borders, and a landscape that feels genuinely wild for being minutes from the heart of Silicon Valley.
There's something almost links-like about Baylands — the open sky, the exposed turf, the sense that the ball is always at the mercy of something larger than your swing. On calm mornings, the bay shimmers and the place feels like a reward. By afternoon, when the marine layer burns off and the westerlies kick up, it becomes a proper examination.
Accessible and unpretentious, this is public golf with real character.
