Lake Lure sits in a dramatic fold of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Rutherford County, about an hour southeast of Asheville, and the landscape here does most of the talking. The town is defined by its man-made lake — completed in 1927 and long a draw for visitors seeking mountain scenery — and the rocky face of Chimney Rock looms over the whole valley. Golf in this corner of North Carolina tends to mean elevation changes, tree-lined corridors, and shots where the horizon drops away below you.
Bald Mountain Golf Course takes its name from the surrounding ridgeline and plays through the kind of wooded mountain terrain that rewards patience and local knowledge over raw power. A par 72 layout in this topography almost certainly means a mix of demanding uphill tests and downhill holes where club selection becomes genuinely tricky.
For visitors, Lake Lure itself is the draw — a quieter, less-commercialized alternative to the Asheville golf scene, with mountain golf that earns its views.
