Grayson Lake State Park Golf Course sits within one of eastern Kentucky's quieter recreational destinations, a state park built around the 1,500-acre Grayson Lake reservoir in Carter County. This is hill country — the tail end of the Appalachian foothills, where the terrain rolls and tumbles in ways that make flat lies a luxury and course management a genuine exercise. The surrounding landscape is heavily wooded, and the seasons here are distinct: spring brings vivid green to the hardwood ridges, fall turns the hillsides amber and rust, and summer afternoons can carry real heat and humidity off the water.
As a state park layout, this is public golf in the truest sense — accessible, affordable, and rooted in the community. These courses rarely chase prestige, but the better ones use their natural terrain honestly, and in a region this hilly, there's no shortage of character to work with.
Carter County is not a golf destination in any marketed sense, which is part of the appeal. Rounds here come without the trappings of resort golf — just the course, the trees, and the lake country of the Daniel Boone National Forest nearby.
