Few golf destinations in Ohio's northwest corner offer what Maumee Bay delivers: a links-style layout built directly along the southwestern shore of Lake Erie, where the wind is a constant and genuine factor rather than an occasional nuisance. The course was designed by Arthur Hills, the Toledo-born architect who built a distinguished career shaping courses across the American Midwest and beyond. Hills leaned into the site's flat, open lakeside terrain rather than fighting it, producing a design that rewards shot-shaping and strategic thinking over pure power.
As a state park course, Maumee Bay punches well above its weight in terms of setting. The surrounding park encompasses marshlands, beaches, and migratory bird habitat — the kind of environment that gives a round here a sense of place you won't find at a typical daily-fee layout. Deer, herons, and waterfowl are regular playing companions.
Oregon, Michigan sits just east of Toledo on the Lake Erie shoreline, a working-class lakeside community that happens to have one of the more memorable public golf experiences in the Great Lakes region.
