Few public courses in the Atlanta metro area have earned the kind of consistent respect that Chicopee Woods commands. Designed by Denis Griffiths and opened in 1994, it occupies a stretch of the Chicopee Woods Nature Preserve north of Gainesville — a setting that gives the layout genuine breathing room and a wilder, more naturalistic feel than most municipal tracks in the region. The course is routinely cited among Georgia's better public options, drawing players from across the northern suburbs who want something more substantive than a weekend scramble course.
The terrain does a lot of the work here. Hall County's rolling Piedmont topography, threaded with hardwoods and the occasional wetland corridor, creates natural elevation changes and forced carries that reward shot-making over raw power. Wind off Lake Lanier to the east can be a quiet factor on exposed stretches.
Gainesville sits at the edge of the Blue Ridge foothills, and that geography gives Chicopee Woods a distinct sense of place — you're playing in a preserve, not just on one.
