Few courses on the Costa del Sol command quite the attention that La Reserva does. Designed by Cabell Robinson and opened in 2003 within the exclusive La Reserva de Sotogrande residential estate, it sits just inland from Sotogrande — one of Andalusia's most storied and prestigious addresses in golf — and carries that lineage with obvious confidence. Robinson, a longtime associate of Pete Dye who developed a distinguished portfolio across Spain and Portugal, shaped the land here with a sense of scale and ambition that sets La Reserva apart from the coast's more commercial offerings.
The course rolls through mature cork oak forest and Mediterranean scrubland on genuinely undulating terrain, with broad views toward Gibraltar and the Moroccan coastline on clear days. That landscape does real work: the trees frame holes tightly enough to demand accuracy off the tee, while the elevation changes add drama without feeling manufactured.
San Roque itself sits in the far southwestern corner of Spain, where the Atlantic and Mediterranean climates converge, keeping conditions mild through most of the year. La Reserva plays as a private club tied to the surrounding estate, so access is typically reserved for residents and their guests — which only reinforces its air of quiet exclusivity.
