Nullarbor Links - Skylab

Few golf experiences on earth are as conceptually audacious as Nullarbor Links, the world's longest golf course — stretching roughly 1,365 kilometres along the Eyre Highway between Ceduna, South Australia and Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. Each of the 18 holes is administered by a roadhouse or small community along the route, and the Skylab hole at Fraser Range Station is one of the course's more evocative stops. The station takes its name from NASA's Skylab space station, debris from which famously scattered across this stretch of remote Western Australia when it re-entered the atmosphere in 1979, making international headlines and earning the local shire a tongue-in-cheek littering fine from a San Francisco radio station.

Fraser Range sits in a vast, treeless semi-arid landscape of saltbush and granite outcrops, where red dust defines everything and the horizon feels impossibly wide. Playing a hole here is less a round of golf and more a communion with one of the planet's most genuinely empty places.

The course opened in 2009 and was conceived as a way to draw travellers off the highway and into the communities along the Nullarbor Plain. Each hole has a local caretaker, a real tee box, and a real green — making this par-72 layout as legitimate as it is surreal. Bring your own water.
