The Santa Ana winds come through here, the bougainvillea climbs the fences along the perimeter, and somewhere between the 405 and the 57, Dad Miller has been doing exactly what it was built to do — giving working people a place to play golf. This is Orange County's flatlands: the low-lying basin where Anaheim spreads wide and unheroic, ringed by freeways and tract homes, the San Gabriel Mountains visible on a clear day before the marine layer rolls in from the coast. It's not dramatic geography, but it doesn't need to be.
At 5,788 yards and a par of 70, this is a course that rewards accuracy over power. A 67.6 rating and a 114 slope signal straightforward scoring conditions — a confident bogey golfer can make something happen here — but straightforward doesn't mean thoughtless. Six tee sets stretching down to 5,090 yards make this genuinely playable for a wide range of abilities, which is the whole point.
Municipal golf at its most honest. The regulars know which greens run fast in October, where the sprinklers make the left rough soft, and exactly how to play the whole loop in under four hours. Dad Miller isn't trying to be something it's not. In a region drowning in resort golf and private exclusivity, that's worth something.
