Few private clubs in the southern Appalachians command the loyalty Cullasaja Club does among its members. Designed by Tom Fazio and opened in 1988, the course occupies the highlands plateau above Highlands, North Carolina — one of the highest incorporated towns in the eastern United States — where the elevation keeps summer temperatures cool and the surrounding hardwood forest turns spectacular in autumn. Fazio routed the layout through terrain that required genuine imagination, and the result is a course that feels sculpted rather than imposed, with holes that use natural contours and dramatic elevation changes to create lasting impressions.
Cullasaja has long been regarded as one of Fazio's stronger mountain designs, and its private, member-only status has helped preserve both the conditioning and the intimacy that define the experience. The fairways are generous enough to reward good thinking, but the Appalachian topography ensures that flat lies and easy decisions are rarely on offer.
Highlands itself draws a discerning seasonal crowd from Atlanta, Charlotte, and beyond, and Cullasaja fits that culture precisely — unhurried, serious about its golf, and entirely at ease with its exceptional setting.
