Few stretches of the English coast are more dramatic than the South Hams of Devon, and Thurlestone Golf Club makes the most of every acre of it. Founded in 1897, the club sits on the clifftops above the village of Thurlestone, with views across Bigbury Bay toward Burgh Island and the open Atlantic. The course takes its name from the famous "thurled stone" — a natural rock arch standing just offshore — and that sense of ancient, windswept landscape runs through every round.
Links-style turf and prevailing Atlantic breezes define how Thurlestone actually plays. The ground is firm and fast, rewards ground game thinking, and punishes anything careless when the wind gets up — which, on this part of the Devon coast, is most of the time. The routing moves through gorse-lined fairways with the sea appearing and disappearing as the land rises and falls.
The club remains a traditional members' club that has served the local community and visiting golfers for well over a century. For anyone touring Devon's golf, it offers something the inland parkland courses simply cannot: salt air, coastal theatre, and a genuine connection to the landscape.
