Few golf experiences in New England carry quite the sense of remove that Sconset does. Set on the eastern edge of Nantucket — already an island 30 miles off the Cape Cod coast — the course sits near the village of Siasconset, a cluster of rose-covered cottages that feels frozen somewhere around 1910. You arrive here by ferry, then by car or bike, and the journey itself becomes part of the ritual.
The par 66 layout is short by modern standards, built around the assumption that the Atlantic wind will do the heavy lifting. Nantucket's open moorland, scrub oak, and salt air define the setting as much as any architectural feature, and on a blustery day the course demands a level of shot-making and course management that belies its length.
Sconset is a seasonal operation serving a community of summer residents and visitors who return year after year. It offers something increasingly rare: golf played for its own sake, without pretense, in a landscape that would be worth visiting even without the clubs.
