Rattle Run Golf Course

Rattle Run has earned a genuine reputation as one of the stronger public-access tests in Michigan's Thumb region, drawing players from the Detroit metro area and beyond who are willing to make the drive up I-94 for a course that punches well above its green-fee weight. Designed by Arthur Hills and opened in 1977, it winds through mature hardwoods along the creek that gives the course its name, with tree-lined corridors that demand shape and accuracy off the tee rather than just raw distance.

The layout sits in St. Clair County, just inland from the St. Clair River and Lake Huron's western shore — flat Great Lakes geography that Hills interrupted with natural contour, using the creek crossings and wooded boundaries to manufacture genuine strategic interest. The par-73 configuration reflects the terrain's honest character rather than any gimmick.

Rattle Run hosted a USGA qualifier and has long carried the kind of word-of-mouth standing that keeps a public course relevant across decades — not because of a flashy renovation, but because the original bones were simply well done.
