Few public golf courses in New Jersey carry the reputation that Hominy Hill does. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. and opened in 1964, it was built as part of Monmouth County's park system and has since become one of the most celebrated municipal layouts in the entire country — regularly appearing on national lists of the best public-access courses. That a county-owned facility consistently earns that kind of recognition says everything about how seriously this course was built and how carefully it has been maintained.
Jones gave Hominy Hill the full treatment: generous but demanding, with wide fairways that invite the driver before exposing any approach that misses the proper angle. The greens are large and contoured, and the overall routing makes strong use of the gently rolling New Jersey countryside that defines this part of Monmouth County — horse farm country, leafy and unhurried, well removed from the coastal crowds.
Colts Neck sits in the quieter interior of the Shore region, and Hominy Hill fits its surroundings well — a serious golf course for players who want a genuine test without a private-club price tag.
