Few courses in Ireland make a stronger case for golf as a purely visual experience. Westport Golf Club sits on the shores of Clew Bay in County Mayo, with Croagh Patrick — the iconic conical mountain pilgrims have climbed for centuries — rising dramatically to the south. The views alone would justify the trip, but the course beneath your feet is equally serious, a Fred Hawtree design that has earned genuine respect on the Irish circuit and hosted Irish Amateur championships over the years.
Hawtree routed the layout to take full advantage of the bay-side terrain, mixing parkland stretches with holes that press close to the water, where the Atlantic wind becomes as much a factor as any bunker or hazard. The par-73 card reflects the course's honest length rather than any softness — this is a course that rewards patience and shot-shaping over raw power.
County Mayo is serious golf country, and Westport sits comfortably among the west of Ireland's considerable riches. The town itself is one of Ireland's most likeable, with a strong pub and music culture to round out an evening after a round worth remembering.
